Help Please!

I broke my sewing drought last night and made a purse. I cut it out months ago and it sat by my machine waiting to be sewn. Since NASCA was in rain pause most of last night I decided to put it together. (NASCA is my dirty little pleasure, it's all the pretty drivers going fast) It turned out OK, but I like the inside better than the outside. So, the outside needs some jazzing up. That's where I need help, so please, please offer some suggestions! (I'm looking at you, Mary Ann and Candi)

The outside:

The inside:

I could take it apart and reverse it, but the pockets are too short to be of any use on the outside, I would loose anything I put in them. I used scrap fabric to make it and I don't have enough to make deeper pockets.

Detail:

So, help me out. What can I do to make the bag less plain? Or is it OK as it is?

Okay, I LOVE the purse. But the inside fabric is definitely cuter than the outside fabric. Of course, I don't know how to sew and I am not very creative, so I am of no help to you. Sorry.

I am totally jealous of all your skills.

Thanks Christy! I'm jealous of your rug rats, so we're even! ;-)

Ideas: a big floppy flower pin, a line of BIG rick rack around the middle or bottom, a row of buttons sewn around the top, a large funky button and closure on the outside...

Sew a little outside pocket on and use that other material. and the button idea is good, buttons always look cool.

I love it.

I'd go with the outside pocket using the inside fabric AND some kind of nautical large button.

Hmmm, maybe some sort of cording couched along the edge/opening? And maybe along the straps too? I like the nautical button idea too.

Oooo.....back to the cording....what if you used something rope-y like, so it looked like the rope used on a ship? And left the ends hanging on one side? Still thinking....I may be back.....

Oh, and you'll just have to be patient and wait to see the secret project. :-)

Dice,

I love the cord idea. I'll have to look in my stash and see if I have any. If I don't I'm thinking of using the blue fabric scraps and appliquéing an anchor on the side or do a line of hexagonal paper piecing across the bottem.

Thank you everyone for the sugestions!

How about a whale or ship applique cut from the dark blue fabric. Or Mary AAnn's ideas were in my head as well.
